Day 7/30 – The aftermath of too much yeast extract

Yesterday, I decided to give another try. I’ve been skeptical about soy products (though many of the things I eat contain some residue of it) because of reading some not so nice things about it. My concerns have been the fact that soybeans are cultivated on former forests. After an email conversation about Muriel and an article, I was convinced that it’s since the main negative side of soy farming was the meat production (cattle being fed soy). I therefore gave it a try and followed the instructions sent to me on preparing tofu. The recipe I chose was with mango chutney, ginger, garlic, orange peels and orange juice. To give it my own touch I added a bit of coriander and Marmite yeast extract. I’ve had this extract for some time and having last year’s memory of a serious vitamin B12 deficiency, I decided that a teaspoon of yeast extract could only add benefits to an already delicious dish. This is the part where I advise you to not to this at home unless you’re preparing a stew or some other dish for maybe 4-6 persons.


The meal turned out fine (just a bit umami on the flavour side). I enjoyed mine with some yellow beans and red rice (so far so good). The morning after however, my stomach felt strange and a bit sore at first. I showered, had breakfast, went to the toilet a bit more than usual but thought that it would pass after one or two hours. It didn’t! Things got worse but not to the point where my main company for the day would be a toilet (but close). I was teaching and the universe must’ve heard my prayers because although I spent the day lecturing three different classes of 4th graders, things went well. After finishing my lectures, I ate some Quorn pasta. Feeling afterwards I went to pick up the keys for my new apartment. What you should know is that this would be the first time I saw my apartment. The viewing didn’t quite go as planned, so I never saw it. BUT I saw a similar apartment in the building next to it. The size and design is almost similar. While waiting for the woman at the counter to get my keys I took one of their bon bons. BIG MISTAKE. From their on my stomach just got worse, so the first thing I did in my new apartment was to visit the toilet. This will probably be a good story in 5-10 years, but at that moment I wished my bed was near. The pain subsided for ten minutes, during which I rejoiced in having a bathtub again and my very first walk-in closet plus a bigger kitchen. Finally in the loving care of my bed I googled up information about yeast extract in food and guess what?


While “the right amount can help your immune system do its job by helping it absorb vitamins, minerals and fight disease”. Too much yeast on the other hand can cause rash and ta ta raraaa – loose stomach! I’m not going to write the word, but I know you’re thinking about it. I took a pill and ate vegan pizza in the arms of my bed which took away most of the pain. What did we learn today? Moderation is best when trying something new.
